You know Costco Wholesale is one of Clark Howard’s favorite stores, but do you know what the warehouse club’s nearly 87 million members are buying on those bare concrete floors?
These are the best-selling product categories at Costco right now
The latest info culled from Costco’s Q1 2017 operating results shows the following categories are hot at the warehouse club:
- Small electrics
- Special events
- Hearing aides
“Our number one selling liquor item is our KS Vodka,” CEO Craig Jelinek recently told Clark.
For those of you not in the know, “KS” refers to Kirkland Signature — Costco’s beloved store brand lable that’s on everything from soup to nuts…and socks to vodka!
When it comes to hearing aides and opticals, Clark has super-cheap solutions to both problems. Here’s everything you need to know about getting cheap prescription glasses online, and here’s a high quality invisible hearing aid that allows you to select settings at home for just $299.
What’s not selling at Costco?
- Fresh food
In the parlance of investors, all three categories are facing “deflationary headwinds,” which simply means consumers know that goods or services will be cheaper tomorrow than they are today — so they wait it out for a better price.
Traditional supermarkets have struggled mightily with food deflation. The few bright spots in Costco’s otherwise ailing fresh food sales have been produce and deli.
Meanwhile, traditional tobacco sales are down big time to the tune of a 20% decline year-over-year. Perhaps that’s due in part to stiff competition from the rise of vaping.
And of course, it goes without saying that TVs are always getting cheaper. Check out our new Deals site and stay abreast of all the latest sales!
