The nation’s largest shopping mall announced in early October that it would be closed on the holiday so that employees can spend time with their loved ones.
However, the mall said some tenants would be given the choice to open anyway.
“In years past we’ve all rallied together to answer the call for 24/7 shopper access that the Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend brings,†Mall of America Executive Vice President Rich Hoge and Senior Vice President of Marketing Jill Renslow said in a message to mall employees. “However, it also meant that team members may not have been able to share the day with family and friends. That is why this year we have made the decision to close on Thanksgiving Day so that team members can put that energy where it matters most, into making memories with the people they care about most.â€
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, only Macy’s, Sears and the Crayola Experience will open on Thanksgiving Day. The entire mall will officially reopen at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.
After Mall of America’s announcement, a major mall operator said it would also close 73 shopping centers on Thanksgiving and many retailers followed suit, including Costco, Marshalls and Home Depot.
Most of the larger retail chains still plan to open on Thanksgiving Day across the country.
