Costco Wholesale — one of money expert Clark Howard’s favorite stores — is on a tear right now with sales climbing in March thanks to strong performance across a variety of departments.

But have you ever wondered what’s really selling at Costco? We’ve uncovered some interesting tidbits from a transcript of the warehouse club’s Q2 2018 earnings call.

The latest info culled from Costco’s second quarter results shows the following categories are hot at the warehouse club both in the United States and Canada:

• Hearing aids
• Pharmacy
• Optical
• Travel
• Food
• Sundries
• Tobacco
• Liquor
• Candy
• Tires
• Appliances
• Computers
• Tablets

The inclusion of pharmacy as one of the best-performing categories shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Costco has long held a reputation for offering some of the best prices on medications, though it was recently undersold substantially by a relatively unknown competitor in a price-comparison test done by Consumer Reports.

That said, one thing that’s nice about the Costco pharmacy is you don’t need to be a member to fill your prescription there. Some locations even have a separate entrance for non-members that leads directly into the pharmacy.

Meanwhile, another best-seller — the optical services that Costco offers — are also available to non-members who want an exam or screening. If, however, you need to buy glasses, contacts or hearing aids, you’re going to need a membership or a friend with a membership.

Finally, alcohol again shows up as a perennial performer for Costco. It too represents another product category where you may not need a membership to get into the door to buy it.

That’s because some states prohibit the sale of alcohol through any club or membership. Check with your state laws if you’re not a member, but want access to great prices.

“Our number one selling liquor item is our KS Vodka,” CEO Craig Jelinek told Clark in a 2017 interview.

For those of you not in the know, “KS” refers to Kirkland Signature — Costco’s beloved store brand label that’s on everything from soup to nuts…and socks to vodka!
