And when the electricity goes out, that’s when they’re really an indispensable tool to have at home β€” no matter whether you live in an RV, an apartment or a traditional single family dwelling.

Yet here’s the thing: Portable generators can be expensive. Some can costs thousands of dollars, making it easy to blow through your budget really quickly.

But don’t worry, if you’re a fan of saving money there are some great places you can shop online to get a deal!

How to get a deal on a portable generator

Daily deal sites

When it comes to daily deal sites, there’s certainly no shortage of places you could shop. Meh, Morning Save and Woot are all popular destinations in this category. But Woot is our favorite pick in this space because it’s the one that tends to run the most daily deals on portable generators.

In early April 2021, Woot offered a WEN 2250-watt portable inverter generator for $419.99. That was a savings of some $80 at the time compared to Walmart for the same model.

You can see our original deal post here, but keep in mind that it’s now expired because each Woot deal only lasts for 24 hours.

That’s why you may want to sign up for our daily newsletter at the bottom of this page…so the deals come to your inbox when they’re still active!

Big-box home improvement stores

The Home Depot and Lowe’s are also great places to shop online for portable generators. While you can find everyday low prices on generators at either of them, the big-box home improvement stores are nice because they also offer daily deals that are more in line with the Woots and Mehs of the world:

How good can the prices be? Well, Lowe’s recently had a Westinghouse iGen 2500-watt inverter gasoline portable generator for $399. That was $200.99 off the list price. Meanwhile, that beat the next best price we found at eBay by an additional $97.90.

Also, the Home Depot recently had an 1800-watt solar-powered portable generator for $899.99. That’s a $100 savings off list price!

Online retailers

Amazon and eBay can also be great places to find deals on portable generators.

For example, eBay recently had a Pulsar G2319N 2,300W portable gas-powered inverter generator for $363.86. At the time, that was a savings of $36.13 over the next best price we found at Newegg.

Warehouse clubs

If you’re a longtime follower of Clark Howard‘s, you know that the money expert loves warehouse clubs for their low markups. You get access to those savings for a nominal annual membership fee.

Here at ClarkDeals.com, we’ve seen some great prices on portable generators from Sam’s Club and Costco Wholesale over the past year.

As just one example, Sam’s Club recently had a Gentron 8,000W / 10,000W portable gas-powered generator with electric start for $499. Meanwhile, we found the same generator at Factory Pure for $859. So you would have saved $360 if you bought from Sam’s Club! (Non-members can still enjoy the savings but a surcharge will apply.)
