The month of April offers 8 great deals

Are you sitting on a little extra cash from a tax refund? Here are few items worth considering this month, according to Consumer Reports

Lawn mowers and tractors

The grass is growing, but it’s not too tall yet — which means you can score a deal right now before everybody needs a mower in another month.

Want to save the most money of all? Consider an old-fashioned reel mower, also known as a push mower.

“Sure, they’re not practical if you’re mowing 40 acres, but admit it, you’ve probably got a suburban lawn that’s well within your ability,” our contributor Katy Wolk-Stanley writes. “Without a motor, there’s nothing to maintain and no gas to buy. Maybe sharpen the blades every so often and you’re set for the season!”

Ultimately, you’ll want to check out Consumer Report’s lawn mower and tractor guide for tips on buying the right machine for your needs.

Gas grills

Grilling season hasn’t yet fully fired up, so if you want a hot deal on a grill…what are you waiting for?!

Buying a pre-assembled grill? You’ll want to kick the tires, figuratively speaking, by inspecting it for loose wheels, loose lids, etc.

If you’re installing a new line for your gas grill, be sure to follow these steps to ensure safe installation.

Check out Consumer Report’s gas grill ratings to compare choices.

Cordless drills and tools

Don’t start a home-improvement project without one of these bad boys!

The Home Depot currently has this Ryobi tool deal as one of their Special Buys of the week. It’s an 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Kit (5-Tool) for $169.

That’s $80 off the list price and the tool kit includes a drill, impact driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw, work light and two lithium-ion batteries.

You’ll also get a Ryobi bag to put the tools in.

While flooring of all types is on sale this month, here’s a word to the wise when you’re dreaming about what you want next on the floors in your home….

Ceramic flooring is the #1 kitchen upgrade that could ruin your home’s value.

“It looks great, and it’s oh so durable but your legs will be aching by dinnertime. Hard ceramic is not the type of flooring you want to stand on for long periods,” contributor Maryalene LaPonsie notes. “Plus, any dropped dishware is more likely to shatter on ceramic than on softer flooring options like cork or hardwood.”

You’re going to need a reliable vacuum cleaner to pick up after guests who make a mess during spring gatherings at your home!

Consumer Reports has a new tally that covers many popular canister vacuums (both bagged and bagless). The real lesson from their findings is you’ll have to shell out at least in the mid $200 range to get quality. Sorry, no sub-$100 vacuum for you.

So thank goodness these things are on sale in April!

Right now, Target has the Dyson Ball Origin upright vacuum on sale for just $199.99. That’s a savings of $150 off the original list price of $349.99! Get this deal.

Pressure washers

Spring is a great time to power wash your home’s siding, deck or driveway and give it that crisp, clean look!

Check out this Ryobi 1600-PSI Electric Pressure Washer (RY141600) for $79 at the Home Depot.

Room air conditioners

If you need a new air conditioner, don’t wait for the blazing temperatures to set in before you get one…unless you want to pay top dollar.

But let’s take one step back here: Before you even shell out for a new AC, you might want to make some tweaks on your existing system to see if you can improve its performance.

Or maybe you want to go really rogue this spring and see how long you can go without AC. In that case, check out this list of 9 air conditioning alternatives.

You don’t have to pay a lot to get great protection from the sun’s harmful rays this season.

Consumer Reports recently updated its Sunscreen Buying Guide and Walmart was a big winner with its Equate store brand.

Both of these Walmart store brand products were named as “best buys” — Equate Ultra Protection SPF 50 for $7.85 (that’s just $0.49 per ounce) and Equate Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30 for $4.98 (that’s $0.83 per ounce).
