Save big during Amtrak’s latest BOGO sale!

Amtrak has brought back one of its most popular sales — the BOGO companion fare!

The buy-one-get-one-free companion fare is offered when two travel in the same roomette, bedroom or family room (with the purchase of one regular full adult fare). Choose to ride the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Silver Star, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle from November 11 through April 8.

There are some blackout dates to work around: November 21-December 3; December 21-23; December 27-January 3.

Sale tickets must be purchased on or before October 14 using promo code V550.

Here are some examples of sale ticket prices for two persons sharing a roomette:

  • $155 Memphis – New Orleans
  • $272 Chicago – New Orleans
  • $345 Washington DC – Miami
  • $349 Atlanta – New York
  • $383 Los Angeles – Seattle

Here are additional examples of the BOGO deal:

  • The 35-hour Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle costs $383 for a roomette; $712 for two sharing a bedroom.
  • Board the Sunset Limited for a 48-hour ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Rates for two sharing a roomette are $441; $820 for bedrooms.

So how do you choose accommodations? The least expensive roomette feature reclining seats that turn into a bed. The small space of 3.5 by 6.5 feet also offers a large viewing window. Larger bedrooms, 6.5 by 7.5 feet feature a larger window, a sofa bed and a toilet and shower.

Both the roomettes and bedrooms include bed linens, pillows, temperature controls, lights, bedside storage, outlets, and a fold-down table. Additionally, sleeping accommodations come with meals on most routes.

Keep in mind that this BOGO sale is for one-way travel and does not include a return trip to your originating city.

If you didn’t hear already, Amtrak is doing away with its kitchens and the white linen dining service. In its place will be a more casual service offered on one-night routes east of the Mississippi. Meals will be pre-packaged (like on an airline) and continental breakfasts will be served buffet-style.

The new flexible dining will allow passengers in roomettes and bedrooms room-delivered or dine in a scaled-down private car with booths. Coach or seat-only passengers may purchase hot meals in the cafe car.

The dining car changes are already underway on the City of New Orleans, Cardinal (NYC-Chicago), Crescent (NYC-New Orleans) and Silver Meteor lines — and — in 2020 on the Silver Star route (NYC-Miami).

The Empire Builder (Chicago-Portland OR and Seattle) will continue to have a dining car serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are free for sleeping car passengers. Coach passengers can purchase meals in the dining car.
