Demand for cruising is climbing high in 2023 yet with rising costs in fuel, labor, food and more, cruise lines still struggle to turn a profit. What’s a cruise line to do? Raise the costs on some customer services such as drink packages, specialty dining and service (gratuity) fees.

Already several major cruise lines have abandoned the traditional twice-a-day stateroom service by day, followed by evening turn-down and tidying service. Carnival cut back to once-a-day cleaning on its ships in 2021. This year, both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian this year have followed that lead. (Back on land, most hotel groups are even phasing out daily maid service.)

In January, Norwegian Cruise Line raised its service charges for passengers staying in most cabins to $20 per day, 25% higher than its 2022 rates.

Drink packages have been steadily rising in price, with hikes exceeding the rate of inflation in many cases. On several lines, an alcoholic drink package now tops $100 per person per day.

However, this deal may offer rates that are lower than most. If you are seeking a new way to cruise for adults only, check out Virgin Voyages. When Virgin Voyages says everything onboard is included, they mean it. No crowded buffets or designated dining times, no fine print, and no surprise receipts. Plus, your food is sustainably sourced and made fresh to order. Since these cruises are only for adults, expect some wild nights. Check out the onboard experience.

Through March 31, Virgin Voyages offers 50% off of the 2nd passenger sharing your cabin plus up to $600 in premium drinks on 7 or more night voyages. Virgin has four gorgeous ships that sail the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Also included in this sale is over $600 of value including 20+ eateries, group fitness, tips, and more. Valid on sailings through December 17. Airfare is additional.

I priced out a 7-night sailing on Resilient Lady in May that begins and ends in Athens, Greece. Ports of call are along the Adriatic Sea (Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu and more). The start sale rate for two persons sharing an Inside cabin (105-177 sq-ft.) is $2,330 (was $3,106). Factor in all extra costs and the discounts, the total rate is $2,566 ($1,283 each).
