A trip to the Maldives is mostly a dream for many. It’s an awfully long trip from the states to Male (25 hours each way) and fancy all-inclusive resorts can be hundreds of dollars a night. But we have tips further down for budget visits.
As quickly as possible, purchase a round-trip Premium Economy class ticket from American/Qantas (OneWorld) to Male from New York-JFK for $1,286. This route is regularly priced at $2,600-$3,300 in Premium. (Premium Economy applies on the Boing 777 JFK-Doha segment with 28 seats per flight).
Depart from September 20-December 1 or January 11-24. The best months to visit the Maldives are November to April.
When booking on Google Flights, select 1 Stop and for the airline select Oneworld to view the shared American/Qatar service.
This amazing offer has no ticket-by date, so hurry!
Back in the 80s, the Male airport was a tin shack and most of the isolated islands had no regular electricity service. How times have changed. You can now choose from over 200 types of accommodations — from budget to over-the-top forget-it prices (see for yourself). Rates at the Jumeirah start at $902 a night.
The struggle to choose where to stay may seem at first overwhelming. That’s because the Maldives are made up of more than a thousand islands. One island may have just one hotel. For those on a budget, seek out hotels that are a boat ride away from Male vs an expensive seaplane ride. Also, choose beachfront villas vs villas with private pools or overwater villas.
