Here are some day trip suggestions:

Loule is about ten miles from Faro, and easily accessible by car or bus. The journey takes 40 minutes (about 3€ each way). The town has a Moorish castle and a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets full of craft workshops. There’s a historic covered market in the center of town and on Saturday mornings, the market is filled with farmed goods, regional specialties, and leather and metalworks.

Take a train from Faro to Tavira, about 20 miles east. It’s considered the prettiest town in the Algarve with beautiful churches, old whitewashed buildings with terracotta roofs, cobbled streets, and small fishing boats in the bay. It’s not filled with major attractions, but is a small town experience for walking, people watching and enjoying a meal or a drink in one of the town plazas.
