8 things on deep discount in October!

Whether you’re looking to check items off your holiday shopping list or just need a few things for around the house, there are a handful of products that are on deep discount during the month of October!

During the Columbus Day weekend, look out for deals on indoor furniture, large appliances and mattresses, according to Howard Schaffer, vice-president of merchandising and partner management at Offers.com, a coupon, promo code, and product deal site. Schaffer also says if you’re shopping in store, make sure to first check for deals online, and then see if the store will match a better price being offered elsewhere.

And for the rest of the month, Consumer Reports says to be on the lookout for these eight items that you can find on super deep discount!

8 items to buy in October

1. Bicycles

We’re nearing the end of the riding season for most areas around the country, so now is a great time to get a deal on a new bike!

2. Computers

If your computer is getting older and a little slow, Consumer Reports suggests first trying a couple of tricks that can help beef up its performance before you go out and buy a new one:

  • Delete programs you no longer use
  • If the computer is more than four years old, add 1GB of memory; Adding memory is a cheap and easy way to upgrade your computer.

You can also check out CR’s computer buying guide for tips on how to get the best one that fits your needs.

One more tip: You don’t need an extended warranty on a computer, so don’t let the sales person at the store talk you into it! Buying an extending warranty gives people peace of mind, but electronics are reliable products in general, and you don’t need to spend that extra money!

Just make sure you make your purchase on a credit card that automatically doubles the manufacturers’ own warranty. You’ll give yourself additional peace of mind without having to spend anything extra. This is a free way to get the job done.

3. Digital cameras

If you’re looking for a gift for a budding photographer, right now is a great time to get a good deal on a digital camera!

There are zillions of camera options out there, so you need to do a little research to make sure you select one that’s in your budget and fits your needs. Check out CR’s buying guide for tips on picking the best one for you and your family.

4. Gas grills

The end of grilling season is upon us, which means several stores are offering deep discounts on grills. If you’re thinking about buying one, CR says to consider how much space you’ll need for it and how much cooking space you need the grill to have (how many people will you typically be cooking for?). Check out CR’s gas grill ratings to compare choices.

5. Lawn mowers and tractors

If you have an old mower or tractor that breaks, it may not be worth the money to fix it. According to the latest data from the Consumer Reports National Research Center, here’s when it’s time to move on and buy a new one:

  • Push lawn mowers: Typically not worth fixing after four years
  • Self-propelled mowers: Not worth fixing after five years
  • Old tractors: Might be worth repairing, but consider the cost of getting them to and from a repair shop and how much the actual repair will cost.

Check out CR’s lawn mower and tractor guide for tips on buying the right one for your needs.

6. Patio furniture

As summer came to an end, patio furniture has been on sale for a couple of months now. But during October, CR says outdoor furniture can be marked down between 50% and 80% at several stores.

When deciding what type of furniture you want for an outdoor space, make sure to consider a few things, like the weather it must withstand, whether there’s salt in the air, and if you need sturdy pieces that can’t be knocked over by children or pets. Check out CR’s tips for factors to consider when buying outdoor furniture.

7. Summer sporting goods

October is a great time to find deals on all sporting and outdoor goods, including big sales on camping gear, and discounts of up to 50% and 60% off baseball and golf gear.

Check out Cabela’s for sales on camping and other outdoor gear. Look for sales on baseball and golf products in stores and online.

8. Winter Clothing

It’s time for stores to get rid of older winter clothing in order to make room for this season’s inventory. Know what that means? Inexpensive gifts for family and friends this holiday season!

Here are some shopping tips from Consumer Reports to help you save on some winter clothing items, including when and where to look for deals.

  • Kohl’s: Check out the “Gold Star Clearance” sale that cuts prices up to 80% on weekend nights
  • Target: Women’s clothing is usually marked down on Tuesday, men’s on Wednesdays and kids’ on Mondays
  • Marshalls/T.J. Maxx: Discounts usually pop up on Wednesdays
