It’s National Sandwich Day today, and who doesn’t love a deal on a sandwich?!
The history books trace the invention of the sandwich back to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, a British statesman who held various military and political offices during the 18th century. Though accounts vary as to exactly how the sandwich was invented, one narrative points to Sandwich’s gambling habits, saying he ordered his servants to bring him salted meat between two pieces of toasted bread as an alternative to a long meal.
Another story references Sandwich’s commitment to his profession and the subsequent lack of time to sit down to a meal at the dinner table. Regardless of how it happened, the name stuck, and it’s how meat between two slices of bread and all the stuffings came to become known as a sandwich.
