So where’s Terceira Island and what’s to see and do?
Terceira Island is one of the nine islands making up the Azores. Terceira is 90 miles northwest of the largest island in the Portuguese Azores, Sao Miguel. Some refer to Terceira as the Hawaii of Europe!
Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Terceira’s capital city of Angra do Heroísmo is dotted by historical buildings, colorful houses, restaurants, shops, and cafes to discover.
Head across the island to visit the seaside town of Praia da Vitória to enjoy a beautiful black sandy bay, and picturesque cobblestone streets.
Unique to the island is Algar do Carvão, a lava tube carved out of the middle of the island. You can walk deep inside of this extinct volcano by way of tunnel and staircases access to the caves below (a 150-foot descent) and a crystal clear lake formed by rainwater with unique stalactites and stalagmites. Book a Viator 3-hour tour at per-person rates from $45, including hotel pick-up.
Also formed by a long-extinct volcano is the Monte Brasil peninsula, today designated as a natural reserve. The peninsula is covered in a thick forest that’s full of spring and summer flowers and a hiking trail that leads to the summit. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views. Nearby is Sao Joao Baptista fort, still occupied by the Portuguese army. Guided tours of this early 17th-century fort run each hour (ask a guard at the entrance). This TripAdvisor link shares more about the fort and other island tours, including a full-day jeep tour.
